THE HOME OF COTTON
Did you know? The textile industry is the second largest industry in North Macedonia, topped only by the metal industry. And why? Three extremely important crops are successfully cultivated in North Macedonia: tobacco, poppies and cotton. The chemical and physical properties of the latter make it a unique natural raw material which is ideally suited for making clothes. So there is a centuries-old link between North Macedonia and cotton. Textile production is a traditional industry in this region. Just like with dressGuard.

Today, the appeal of Skopje lies in its immense diversity. There is immense diversity in the ethnic groups who live in the capital city and in the religions they follow. And the architecture of Skopje is equally diverse. Modern buildings stand side by side with new building styled on historic architecture.
And there are also historic landmarks such as the Skopje Aqueduct, which hark back to the olden days. The mixture of culture and sport in the city is also exciting. Besides numerous museums such as the Modern & Contemporary Museum of Art or the National Archaeology & Ethnology Museum, the city centre is also home to the Toše-Proeski Arena, which hosts sports events and concerts.
Around two thirds of the population in North Macedonia are Christian, one third are Muslim.
80% of the vineyards are dedicated to red grapes. Alongside traditional varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, these include local varieties such as Vranec, Prokupac and Kratosija.
Viniculture has a long tradition in North
Macedonia. One classic example is the Chateau
Kamnik wine-growing estate – one of 40
wineries which is now owned privately.
If you want a break from the city, Matka Canyon (west of Skopje) is the perfect place to go. Countless fans of the great outdoors regard this fantastic canyon as being one of the most beautiful places in North Macedonia. The canyon leads through to Lake Matka where you can go boating or canoeing. The canyon itself is also full of adventure and excitement, with numerous caves – the longest being 176 m in length.
Much of life in Skopje is played out on the streets, on Macedonia Square, for example, with its impressive statue of Alexander the Great. Or in any one of the innumerable restaurants, where food is served in abundance. Dining out is a delicious honour indeed – Balkan cuisine has many delights to offer!
